Sustainability

Often times a “Sustainable Project” or “Green Building” is a goal that General Contractors strive for when it is required by the owner.  At Lydig Construction, sustainable building is a component of our daily business - common to every project we complete whether or not it is required.

Lean Construction – From the office to the field, Lydig is focused every day on how we can approach our work in a lean and efficient manner.  We work collaboratively with the design and owner teams to streamline regulatory and construction processes. In turn, this helps to improve the public image for the client, positively impact the working conditions for the end users, and often results in project completion sooner than expected.

Best Management Practices (BMP) for Sustainable Construction  – Lydig believes that continuing the education of our employees is paramount to the future success of our business.  To support this belief, Lydig has created an internal education & training program, Lydig University (LU). LU’s education program for sustainable building is structured around Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Commitment to Measurement.  In short, the BMP’s we implement on every project include items such as storm water management, construction waste reduction and recycling, and enhanced indoor air quality. Once implemeted, the construction team and project is analyized throughout the duration of the project to measure the impact of the BMPs.

Good Stewardship  – We reconize the impact our work makes on the environment every day.  As such, the actions we take today, are structured around providing the next generation with a healthier place to live and conduct business.  We believe in being part of the solution in every aspect of our work which ultimately contributes to the overall success of the project.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design) – LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED provides building owners and operators assurance that their facility conforms with specific green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. Items such as energy savings, water efficiency, carbon dioxide emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources are verified and graded on a 100-point scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts.  LEED Certification categories include: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Examples left to right below include:

  • Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station, LEED Platinum
  • Sports and Rec Center, EWU, LEED Gold
  • Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, LEED Gold

LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) - LEED APs have passed an extensive exam designed to measure knowledge and skill in understanding and facilitating the LEED Rating System. Beyond the exam, continuing education credits are required in order to maintain accreditation.  As part of Lydig’s Best Management Practices, Lydig requires all Project Engineers to obtain their LEED Accreditation before becoming a Project Manager.
